Mykonos, Greece, has become the go-to destination for the rich and famous to enjoy everything the chic Mediterranean island has to offer. Many have dubbed it “the new Ibiza” due to its vibrant nightlife, but the island has quickly become the number one destination to say “I do” in recent years.
Here, we’ll discuss some of Mykonos’ most famous weddings. Who knows, perhaps you’ll exchange your vows there one day, too!
We kick off our list of famous weddings in Mykonos with Ana Beatriz Barros, a former Victoria’s Secret model who married the Egyptian-Greek billionaire Karim El Chiaty in July 2016. Yes, he is a billionaire, with a “B.” That means these two lovebirds could have had their wedding anywhere in the world. They preferred Greece. In typical celebrity fashion, the bride had not one but two stunning gowns for the big day in a ceremony that cost approximately five million euros ($5.54 million). With a guest list that included many successful businessmen, Ana’s fellow models, and the fabulous bridesmaid Alessandra Ambrosio, this was undoubtedly one of the most discussed weddings in Mykonos.
In October 2018, the famous Greek actress Athina Oikonomakou married the successful businessman Filippos Michopoulos in Mykonos. The lovebirds first met on the island, so it’s no wonder they decided to return to their favourite destination to tie the knot. The beautiful ceremony took place in the chapel of a hotel owned by Michopoulos. Athina arrived by boat at the venue accompanied by her father and brother. Silia Kritharioti designed the bride’s stunning gown, and Panos Mouzourakis sang for the couple and their guests. The reception must have been the talk of the island for quite some time, as it was a lavish ceremony that deserves to be remembered as one of the most famous weddings in Mykonos.
Supergirl actress Krys Marshall married her lover Ted Dolan in Mykonos in 2018. The couple met on the dating app OkCupid!, and their relationship grew from there. Eventually, Ted asked Krys to marry him, and she said yes. Although Los Angeles is a beautiful location for a wedding, the couple wanted to escape the bright lights of Hollywood and chose to give their 50 guests an unforgettable Mykonos experience. Krys wore a stunning, sleek Vera Wang gown with a long veil as the couple exchanged vows. It was certainly a wedding weekend that had everything one would expect from a Hollywood actress, on a stunning ceremony overlooking the ocean from a private yacht chartered exclusively for the occasion.
Fans of UK comedy TV will be familiar with Joel Dommett, who has appeared on shows such as Impractical Jokers UK and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! In December 2017, the English stand-up comedian and TV host from Gloucestershire proposed to Hannah. The wedding took place
almost two years later and remains one of the most famous weddings on Mykonos. Hannah looked stunning in a lacy off-the-shoulder bridal gown with a fitted sheer skirt, showing off her impressive figure. Surprisingly, it was the groom who attracted attention with his outfit. Joel looked dapper in a tailored navy suit, but he completed the look with white trainers and a white t-shirt to really nail the smart-casual look.
After his first marriage came to an end, the publisher married his second wife, the famous designer Silia Dragouni, in 2008. The couple also had a newborn son, whom they named Joe. This wedding was particularly special because it not only served as a beautiful marriage ceremony but also as baby Joe’s official christening! After the two ceremonies, the newlyweds hosted their guests at their home on Panormos Beach before moving to the reception that was held at the famous restaurant owned by Christos Zaglaras. With over 1,000 guests, it was most likely one of the largest parties the island has ever seen.
Mykonos is legendary for its memorably fantastic weddings, but it is also an extremely popular holiday destination for the rich and famous. One of the most notable visitors is NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan, who visited the island in 2013 for his honeymoon with his second wife, Yvette Prieto. If that’s not an endorsement of the island’s beauty and allure, we don’t know what is!
If Mykonos seems like the ideal destination for your wedding, then you just need to start looking into the details of your marriage. You and your guests will enjoy it, as for accommodation in Mykonos, you can choose luxury hotels and also explore the unique sights of Mykonos.
